Since our founding in 1900—then part of the Archdiocese of Baltimore—prayers have been lifted on this sacred ground. The first Mass was celebrated in 1901, marking the beginning of a faith-filled journey in Brightwood.
For generations, faithful Catholics of Irish and German descent helped establish the vibrant campus and community of Nativity Parish, building not only our church but also five parish buildings at the corner of Georgia Avenue NW and Peabody Street.
Beginning in the 1960s, the Black Catholic community of Washington embraced Nativity with love and devotion, preserving its rich Catholic heritage and continuing its mission of charity, unity, and faith. Their stewardship has shaped Nativity into the spiritual home it is today.
Saints have walked among us—most notably St. Teresa of Calcutta, who visited here and shared a close spiritual friendship with our former pastor, the late Bishop William Curlin of Charlotte, North Carolina, once Auxiliary Bishop of Washington.
Thousands of children received education and the Sacraments through Nativity School, a beloved institution that left a lasting legacy before closing in 2007. Many alumni still call Nativity home.
Today, Nativity remains a place of daily prayer, love, community, and outreach to those in need across our beautiful city. Our heritage is deep, our faith is strong, and our mission is the mission of the Church.
Today, Nativity Catholic Church remains a vibrant and active parish under the leadership of its current pastor. The church continues to uphold its mission of faith, community, and service, welcoming all who seek spiritual growth and fellowship.
